How to Pick a Lock (Basics) 🔓

I show how pin-tumbler locks work and how they can be opened using lockpicks. This is a fairly basic view about lock picking but I wanted to make it comprehensive to give people a good idea of the concepts. As well as a foundation for beginners in lock picking to get a better view of how a lock works and how it can be exploited. The pin-tumbler is a very common lock mechanism that uses pins of varying lengths to prevent the lock from opening without the correct key. Most locks around the home or office are simple pin-and-tumbler locks and can be relatively easy to open using a pick and a tension wrench.

While the process is simple and can be mastered with practice, picking such a lock requires a great deal of patience. It can be a hobby as well as a practical skill. Locksmiths define lock-picking as the manipulation of a lock’s components to open a lock without a key. To understand lock picking you first have to know how locks and keys work. Most locks are based on fairly similar concepts but they do come in all shapes and sizes, with many design variations. As this is just to cover the basics I don’t go over security pins or more advanced techniques. This video is for educational purposes only.

Lockpicking is the art of unlocking a lock by analyzing and manipulating the components of the lock device without the original key. In addition, ideal lock picking should not damage the lock itself, allowing it to be rekeyed for later use, which is especially important with antique locks that would be impossible to replace if destructive entry methods were used. Although lock picking can be associated with criminal intent, it is an essential skill for a locksmith and is often pursued by law-abiding citizens as a useful skill to learn or simply a hobby. The move towards combination locks for high-security items such as safes was intended to remove the weakest part of the lock: its keyhole.

  3. Quick warning to those that may think lockpicking is a cool skill to have in the real world… It is, but it is a million times harder than this video might suspect it to be. Unless you are comitted and willing to spend hours on hours for the next years perfecting your skill you will come down with a prety hard hangover. I raked this practice lock open within 5 seconds after arival, then I bought the cheapest real lock lock and did it again. Result, it is still not open after 3 days of fidling with it. Lockpicking is harder than one might suspect!

    I got my interest in lockpicking because I was bored and had two padlocks in front of me that were locked and the keys were long gone,so I tried to open one with a very unorthodox technique,without any picking tools,just a slice of metal from a 7UP and a a pair of scisors,and when it opened it felt so good that I got hooked!!
    The second one I picked it with a bit of luck and some imagination,I didn’t know what the tensioner was for and I didn’t have one ofc,so I picked it with a piece of metal the size of a paper clip,apparently what I done was a bypass pick,it took me at least a couple of hours but it payed up,now I’m really into it,and I’m trying to make my own picks!! 🙂 It is an excellent hobby!!

  19. I just got my first clear practice lock and I thought something was jammed in it, the first pin, closest to the hasp. Then I noticed on YOUR lock that this same pin is higher up than the others, even when the lock is ‚at rest‘ and you are not doing anything to it. Do you know what I mean? The one pin, furthest from the key opening, is already higher than the others. Why is this? Sorry if I don’t make much sense. I’m just beginning! Thank you!

  37. I tried with the glass lock so I can clearly see what I’m doing but I’ve tried with another lock and without seeing that’s fucking hard dude 🙁
    I’ll keep training. I need to have that satisfied feeling when I’ll open a regular lock in the house

  38. Is carrying picking tools illegal in western countries ?
    In japan it is a federal offense and could be end up in jail for more than 1 year.

  42. You covered the very basics but didn’t go into security pins at all and how they prevent raking, you also covered a very small amount of picks. It seems like you were a beginner yourself tbh
